Ask Our Experts: Gearing Up for Gardening

Ask Our Experts: Gearing Up for Gardening
As the growing season gathers momentum at the Arnold Arboretum, experience teaches that success in the landscape often comes down to the tools in hand. A recent NYT Wirecutter feature on gardening gear underscores what our arborists, horticulturists, and gardeners already know: reliable, well-made essentials—pruners, saws, and sturdy gloves—can transform daily work into a more safe, efficient, and enjoyable practice. Fit, durability, and care requirements all come into play in making the right choice. Tools that feel balanced and comfortable quickly become extensions of the body, allowing careful pruning, thoughtful planting, and steady maintenance across our diverse collections. Just as important is upkeep—cleaning, sharpening, and storing tools properly to ensure they last through many seasons. The advice from our experts is simple: invest in quality gear, maintain it well, and let the rhythm of the garden guide your work.

What can you learn about plants behind the scenes at the Arnold Arboretum? Our Tree Mobs offer a glimpse. These short, pop-up programs bring our members face-to-face with seasonal highlights in the landscape, guided by the experts who study and care for our collections. From unexpected blooms to emerging research, each Tree Mob is a chance to experience the Arboretum and its collections in new ways. In our latest profile of our membership community, you’ll discover how our members turn these moments into deeper connections—with our trees, with science, and with each other. Our Tree Mob on April 7 featured our Keeper of the Living Collections, Michael Dosmann, sharing insights about our forsythia collection—one of our eight nationally accredited plant collections for conservation and a spectacular display in full bloom. Our members enjoy exclusive access to in-person Tree Mobs, just one of the many ways membership can enrich your experience of nature at the Arboretum.
